Charcoal Benefits Digestion

Maintaining a good digestive tract is essential for proper nutrition. No matter how healthy you eat, you won’t be able to reap the benefits if your gut cannot digest and absorb properly. The best way to maintain your gut is to take out any toxins or bacteria that will interfere with nutrient absorption.

Activated charcoal is known for taking out toxins from the body. It’s commonly used as an effective treatment for poisoning even in the emergency room. Activated charcoal is non-digestible, meaning when you take it in, your body will flush it out. When activated charcoal disperses in your stomach, small positively-charged particles will bind to its surface. As a result, activated charcoal helps your body eliminate toxins by taking them with it when you do your business in the comfort room.

How charcoal benefits digestion

Activated charcoal supports your digestive system by:

Easing gas and bloating

Eating certain foods such as beans, wheat, and dairy can cause gas and bloating after eating. Activated charcoal binds with it all the gasses produced during the digestion process of these food items. As an inert compound, activated charcoal will not cause any reaction with the gas as it binds the gas molecules to its surface.

Take activated charcoal 2 hours before or 2 hours after eating gas-causing food to help remove gas. This will help prevent the activated charcoal from also taking out essential nutrients from your meal.

Relieves food poisoning

Bacteria or virus that contaminates your food often causes food poisoning or stomach flu. Aside from its adsorptive capabilities, activated charcoal also has anti-bacterial properties that can help fight infection and possibly restore the microbiome balance in your gut.

Take it at various intervals 3 times a day when you feel the urge to vomit or suffer diarrhea. Control your intake to 500mg-1000mg per dose to prevent shocking your system as well as constipation.

How to use activated charcoal for healthy digestion and nutrient absorption

  1. Avoid mixing it with drinks – as a powerful adsorbent material, activated charcoal will prevent you from getting nutrients. It will bind all those vitamins and minerals from your food, leaving you with a bare minimum of nutrients.
  2. Do not take along with medications – remember that activated charcoal binds with almost any compound on the planet. That includes all the essential components you need from your prescription. Consult with your doctor first about taking activated charcoal orally if you’re taking maintenance or treatment medications.
  3. Increase your water intake – activated charcoal is known to cause constipation because it draws out water from your stomach and intestines. Take at least 3 liters of water when taking activated charcoal to prevent constipation and dehydration.

Please note that there’s not enough research to prove the efficacy and safety of taking activated charcoal. If you have any health conditions, please talk to your doctor first before you start with your detox therapy. We also highly advise  that you consult with your pediatrician if you wish to use activated charcoal for children.
